Galápagos Residency

March 22 - April 2, 2024

The Galápagos Residency is a 12-day teaching and cultural immersion adventure, culminating in a community-wide showcase.

Prepare for an extraordinary residency in the Galápagos Islands as we head to the pristine and least inhabited island of Floreana within Ecuador's renowned Galápagos archipelago.

While these islands are celebrated for their wildlife, the human communities face many challenges, especially in providing an arts education. In partnership with the local government, our one-week intensive residency will help to fill that void. Join our team of dedicated theatre artists to inspire local students through intense theatre training. This residency culminates in a celebratory performance, showcasing the students' work for their family and community. Be part of a unique transformation, leaving a lasting impact on the island community. Don't miss the chance to make a difference in this breathtaking and remote part of the world. Join us in the Galápagos Islands for this unique Teaching Artist Residency.

INTERESTED IN BECOMING A TEACHING ARTIST RESIDENT?

This residency will send a team of teaching artists to reside in the least inhabited island of Ecuador's Galápagos archipelago, Floreana. There they will teach English and theatre with our partner school. Although these islands are heavily frequented by tourists and many dollars pour in to their preservation, very few funds are actually directed towards the islands' human inhabitants. Because of this, the infrastructure is weaker than you might expect and local schools offer very little in terms of an arts education. In fact, we have yet to come across a theatre group of any sort based in the Galápagos. With this residency, we will help fill that educational gap by providing a one week theatre intensive, voluntarily taught by qualified and highly creative theatre artists.

HOW DOES THIS RESIDENCY WORK?

PRE-DEPARTURE
After a successful interview and acceptance into the program, you will attend an orientation meeting to help you best prepare for this experience. That orientation will be followed by two teaching preparation workshops online. These workshops will be facilitated by our Director of Creative Learning. During these teaching preparation workshops, you will get to know your fellow teaching artists, learn new methods, review old techniques, and develop a lesson plan that best utilizes your skills and the skills of your fellow teaching artists.

ON THE GROUND
Upon arriving in the Galápagos, you will be greeted by your Residency Director & Road Manager/Language Interpreter.  There you will have the opportunity to explore the island of Santa Cruz before departing for your residency destination on the island of Floreana. After settling in to your home away from home, your Road Manager will help you get your bearings and introduce you to the school administrators where you will be working. Then you will jump right in, beginning to teach a 5 day intensive.  You will work with each of your students to develop final performance pieces to be presented at a farewell performance/party for their families. After completing your residency, you will travel to the island of San Cristobal for a bit of well deserved rest and relaxation... and then head home!

POST-TRIP
After returning home, you and your fellow Teaching Artists will be invited to be our special guests at Travelogue — where you will have an opportunity to share a special story from your experience on the enchanted islands!
