ACTion brings together the worlds of experiential travel, community service, and theatre making.
This is an opportunity to learn, share, and grow as an individual and storyteller -- a dramatic adventure that will forever change you, your work, and the world around you.
ACTion: Heart of Europe
July 5 - August 12, 2018
ACTion: Heart of Europe is a 30 day journey across Czech and Slovakia, culminating in a festival of cross-cultural, devised performance in NYC.
This program will take a carefully selected group of theater artists across diverse landscapes -- including castles, cities, villages, and mountains. Each artist will experience and be inspired by the cultures and theater styles found there, learn from and collaborate with local theater artists and professional theater companies, and connect with communities through service projects and educational workshops (teaching acting, playwriting, and conversational English via theatre). Under the guidance of a director, each cast will utilize their experiences to inspire new works for a week of performances in NYC.

Summer of 2019
ACTion: Tanzania is a 30 day trek through Tanzania, culminating in a festival of cross-cultural, devised performance in NYC.
From the sweeping plains of the Serengeti to the twisting streets of Zanzibar, ACTion gives the theatre artist a chance to dig deeper while abroad. Casts will work with NGOs, exchange with local theatre companies, and participate in a full safari, while also connecting directly with the vibrant communities of Tanzania. This summer, we're particularly happy to be partnering with Light in Africa, an internationally recognized "children's village" that gives shelter to orphans with HIV and severe disabilities. While empowering these youth to create plays that reflect their own experience, participants will also devise a piece of their own, which will be previewed at the Zanzibar International Film Festival before premiering in Manhattan.

ACTion: Ecuador is a month-long, immersive journey across the diverse terrains of Ecuador, which climaxes with performances of original devised work in Quito and NYC.
Misty Andean peaks, lush Amazonian rainforests, and the unique wildlife of the Galápagos Archipelago—all these await traveling artists in this year’s ACTion: Ecuador. Through theatre workshops and service work, ACTion artists will exchange with a wide array of disenfranchised Ecuadorian peoples, such as the Afro-Ecuadorian community and the indigenous Shuar and Quechua tribes. While empowering partner communities to craft and perform plays that reflect their own experience, casts will also devise their own new piece of theatre, which will be previewed in Quito before premiering in Manhattan.
Who can take part in an ACTion Project?
ACTion is open to theatre artists at all stages in their career -- from students to emerging artists to seasoned professionals. DAT is looking for talented actors who have a strong desire to explore devised theatre, engage with foreign cultures, and make a positive impact in the lives of youth.
