Jamil A.C. Mangan is an actor, director, teaching artist and native of Newark, New Jersey. He received a BFA in Theatre Arts from the University of the Arts (UARTS) in Philadelphia. As a youngster, Jamil toured four continents and performed for former President Bill Clinton’s 1992 Inauguration with the Newark Boys Chorus. A bit later in life, Jamil began his professional acting career with the role of Orpheus Fisher, Marian Anderson’s love interest in the bio-play My Lord What a Morning. Other notable performances include The Greeks at the Manhattan Ensemble Theatre, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and All That Jive at Newark Symphony Hall. Mr. Mangan toured the U.S. in My Soul is a Witness, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, and Romeo and Juliet. In November of 2008 Jamil Mangan played Joe Moses in Camp Logan alongside T.C. Carson (Living Single, Final Destination 2), and directed by Chuck Patterson (The Five Heartbeats, HAIR). Jamil made his directing debut at Symphony Hall with the production of Gospel at Colonus. The Star-Ledger critic Peter Filichia said, “Jamil A.C. Mangan staged the show with precision.” Jamil has directed and produced an African American cast in Street Car Named Desire, She Should’ve Have Told, a hip-hop version of Macbeth, and numerous staged readings for Playwrights Theatre Of New Jersey. Jamil A.C. Mangan has also been a teaching artist for several years. He has taught for Playwrights of New Jersey, teaching playwriting to 5th – 12th graders. And as a teaching artist for Steve Adubato’s Stand and Deliver, Jamil instructs high school students on the importance of strong communication skills. Other organizations Jamil has taught with include Big Picture Alliance, Restore Kidz, Inc., Playwrights of Philadelphia, UARTS summer arts program, and African Globe Theatreworks. On top of all that, Mangan has volunteered for several charitable organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, and the Newark Boys & Girls Club. Mr. Mangan uses the arts as a vehicle for self-expression, for the exploration of human nature and its significance in our society.
