The Quilotoa Residency
May 22 - June 28, 2012
This five week residency will send a team of teaching artists to reside in the Quechuan village of Quilotoa, Ecuador. There they will teach theatre and English with our partner middle school nestled high in the Andes mountains. This school, and those surrounding it, have little to no arts education available for their students and the English is taught from outdated books. With this residency, Dramatic Adventure Theatre will help fill that educational gap by providing a month of intense theatre and English training, voluntarily taught by qualified and highly creative theatre artists.

HOW DOES THIS RESIDENCY WORK?
.PRE-DEPARTURE
.. - After a successful interview and acceptance into the program, you will attend an orientation meeting to help you best prepare for this experience. That orientation will be followed by three teaching workshops in NYC. These workshops will be facilitated by your Residency Director, our Director of Education, and other company members who have also taught and worked where you will be heading. During these workshops, you will get to know your fellow teaching artists, learn new methods, review old techniques, and develop a lesson plan that best utilizes your skills and the skills of your fellow teaching artists.
..
.ON THE GROUND IN ECUADOR!
.. - Once in Ecuador, you will meet up with your team, including your residency director and road manager (your local guide and translator, who in this case is also a skilled instructor of the Spanish language). Individually and as a team you will have the opportunity in Quito to explore Old Town, begin learning the language, and make final teaching preparations before departing for your residency destination. After settling in to your home away from home in Quilotoa, you will be introduced to the school administrators, teaching facilities, and the local community. Then you will quickly jump right in, beginning to teach. In essence, you will become faculty at your school, teaching nearly every weekday for 4 weeks (with a special weekend excursion to a beautiful organic farm in Tigua planned to recharge your batteries before you hit the final week). You will work with each of your students to develop a final performace piece to be presented at a farewell performance/ party for their families. Your students will be your main focus, but you will also have the opportunity to workshop with interested faculty who may wish to continue teaching theatre after you leave. After completing your residency, you will travel to Mindo for a bit of well deserved rest and relaxation... and then head home!
.POST-TRIP
.. - When you return, you and your fellow teaching artists will be our guests of honor at a special 'Travelogue' event celebrating the completion of your residency and all you accomplished! So, be prepared to share your story at The Travelogue.
